Modernizing old character?

Post by Arahabaki »

How realistic is it for someone with zero experience to edit an old character and modernize some of its features? For example things like, a toggle for character opacity, compatibility with newer characters, effects like x-ray, ect..

I don't have experience with creating mugen related content, but I'm willing to consider trying if some resources are available for learning these particular things and if it isn't an insane time investment.

from what i got tell from other coders and my wish to rework old chars was "you re better making them again from 0 than try to edit their codes"

since theres chars who had "protections" and math on the code for avoid being edit so easily thing was really stupid because the original creators just leave mugen so now is new editors job to rework them similar as possible with a better code

Well, I couldn't define it on a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 is ultra easy and 10 is mega difficult.

But based on what you say you would like to do, I'd give it a 1, but that's my point of view.

What char is it? What author is it from? What version or year of release is it? Where did you download it?

I'm not saying I'll help you, but I could do some of the things you mention while I drink my coke and enjoy a big mac, walking around my house.

And yes, the best of all, it's free...

Now if you want to learn, that's much better. I would invite you to visit the MUGEN owners' page and learn how the code works and at the same time browse Google to find information about what you are looking for.

Depends on How old is old lol old programming as much as old scripting is written so terrible, that it makes it hard to read and debug it

I was considering Buta Yaro because it seemed like an aggressor that just needed a few things to be more usable. Most notably are its cowgirl pose (and potentially a couple other poses) that just don't really seem to work on newer characters. The other major thing I'd say is a way to toggle the character's opacity to make him somewhat transparent because on many of his poses he himself covers basically everything.

You read minds via the internet, I thought the same, that representation in char is grotesque, although everyone is free to use, create and think what they want, in that same tone, would be the thought.

The char is ugly and no, I wouldn't put any work into it on my part.

Fair enough. Doesn't change my original goal of trying to modernize an old character. That one I believed would be a good learning test because of how close I saw it to being a complete character. But it isn't the only one that could use a face lift.

And what if we learn by learning... if I mean making a character from scratch, the sff, snd file and the blessed code, of course without forgetting how to make a color palette for the character and how to extract sprites, not with artmoney, it's not charity either, but why not with winkawas, for other games you'll have to see for yourself.

I would be encouraged to do something like that, if there were users who wanted to learn for free, but who really wanted to learn.
